Danny Faure 4th President of the Republic of Seychelles (16th October 2016 – 26th October 2020)

Danny Antoine Rollen Faure was born on the 8th of May, 1962 to Seychellois parents in Kilembe, Uganda. He has five children and four grandchildren. He is married to Shermin Rudie Faure.
He completed his primary and secondary education in Seychelles and graduated with a degree in Political Science from the University of Havana, Cuba.
Upon his return to Seychelles in 1985, he worked as an Assistant Curriculum Officer with the Ministry of Education and Lecturer at both the National Youth Service and the Seychelles Polytechnic. In June 1989, he was appointed Director of the National Youth Service.
As a young man, Danny Faure worked with the Seychelles People’s Progressive Front. He became the Chairman of its Youth Wing and was elected as a member of the Central Committee of the Party. In June 2009, he was appointed Secretary General of the Party.
With the return of Multi-Party Democracy in Seychelles in 1993, Danny Faure was appointed Leader of Government Business of the majority Party in the National Assembly, a post he served for 5 years from 1993 to 1998.
Danny Faure was appointed as Minister on 28th of March 1998 when he became Minister for Education. He was instrumental in putting forward the idea of a virtual university for small states of the Commonwealth in the Ministers of Education from the Commonwealth meeting held in
Halifax, Canada. He then served on the Board of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) from 2014 to 2016 and one of his initiatives was the support of COL on the Blue Economy for Small Island States. As President of the Republic of Seychelles he was a keynote speaker at the
PCF 9 in Edinburgh in 2019.
In 2001, he assumed the role of Minister for Education and Youth, which he held until 9th of August 2006, when he was appointed as Minister for Finance.
He was assigned portfolio responsibilities for Trade in July 2007 and Industries in August 2009.
He oversaw the implementation of the first generation of reforms under the IMF macro-economic reform programme which started in October 2008. He continued to direct the second generation of reforms as part of the on-going economic programme.
Danny Faure served as Designated Minister from April 2004 to June 2010. On 1 July 2010, Mr Danny Faure was appointed Vice-President of the Republic of Seychelles, holding Ministerial portfolios for Finance and Trade, Public Administration, and Information Communication Technology.
On 16 October 2016, Danny Faure was sworn in as the 4th President of the Republic of Seychelles. He was the Head of Government and held the Ministerial portfolios of Defence, Public Administration, and Legal Affairs. In addition, in February 2020, at the start of the global Covid 19 pandemic, he also held the portfolio of health.
Apart from his remarkable achievements in gender parity at cabinet level, the promulgation of a comprehensive law on domestic violence and the creation of democratic institutions to uphold human rights and the rule of law, Danny Faure has distinguished himself as an exemplary statesman.
During his tenure in Office from (16th of October 2016 to 26th October 2020), President Faure designated 30% of the Seychelles’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as Marine Protected Areas, well ahead of the 2030 deadline set in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
This action made Seychelles a leader in marine protection. His commitment and leadership towards ocean sustainability and protection was recognized by the African Union, which announced him as Champion for the Development of the Blue Economy at the 11th Extraordinary AU Assembly Session in Addis Ababa, November 2018.
Less than a year later, on 13th June 2019, he was awarded the National Geographic Society’s prestigious “Planetary and Leadership Award” at a National Geographic Awards Ceremony at the George Washington University, in Washington DC.
He is an active member of the Friends of Oceans (Action Centre of Nature and Climate of The World Economic Forum) since November 2020.
Danny Faure is Presently the Patron and Chairperson of the Danny Faure Foundation which was launch on the 8th of June 2021, he is also a member of The Eminent and Distinguished Persons Advisory Panel of the Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Ban (TDB).
He was made a Honorary Member of the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa on the 17th of May 2022.
He was appointed Chair of the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) based in Vancouver, Canada on the 3rd of March 2023.
