Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Senegal’s president since April 2, 2024, is the nation’s youngest leader at 44.

 

Born on March 25, 1980, in Ndiaganiao, M’bour Department, he hails from the Serer ethnic group, his middle name “Diomaye” meaning “honourable.” Raised Muslim, Faye studied at Marie Médiatrice Catholic School and Lycée Demba Diop, later earning a law master’s from University Cheikh Anta Diop and training as a tax inspector.

 

A founding member of PASTEF in 2014 with Ousmane Sonko, he championed economic reform and youth empowerment. Imprisoned in 2023 on charges seen as political, Faye was freed via amnesty in 2024, winning 54.3% in the presidential election.

 

His campaign emphasized transparency, declaring assets like a Dakar home and $6,600 in accounts. Married to two wives, both present at his inauguration, Faye blends tradition with modern governance.

 

His presidency focuses on renegotiating foreign contracts and tackling unemployment, aligning with PASTEF’s vision.
